Prospective and New Band Families

Whether you are transferring into West or an incoming freshman, there is a place in the Wildcat band family for you!

Our Band Seasons

At Millard West, the band year is divided into two seasons:

Marching Season

We have two marching bands — a varsity band with guard and a junior varsity (JV) band. Freshmen are generally in the JV band, however, based upon instrumentation needs, may audition for the varsity band. Both bands combine for mass band which participates in the Millard Days Parade, MW March-a-thon, varsity football home games. The JV band prepares a show which they perform during half-time of the last varsity football home game. The varsity marching band prepares a competition show every year and competes in Omaha and regional marching competitions. Past competitions include The Golden Regiment Invitational in Blue Springs, MO and our 2019 Minnesota State Champion win at the Vikings Stadium in Minneapolis! The culmination of our season is the state competition in late October.

Concert Season

Following marching season, we transition to concert season. At Millard West we have Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. The JV marching band transitions to Concert Band and the students in Varsity Marching Band audition to be in Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble. There are also several extracurricular groups: Winter Guard, Jazz Band, and Percussion Ensemble. The bands have 3-4 concerts between December and May. In addition, we divide the entire band into two pep bands that performs at the home varsity basketball games. Our extracurricular groups perform and compete in Omaha area venues.

Other Opportunities

Every three years, the entire band takes a trip. Past trips have included the Holiday Bowl Parade and halftime exhibition, the prestigious Tournament of Roses Parade, and a June 2019 trip to Hawaii for the King Kamehameha parade and a performance honoring the anniversary of “Victory in the Pacific” at the USS Missouri, moored at Pearl Harbor United States Naval base.

Parents are Part of the Band Family Too!

Our band program could not function at West without the support of our band boosters. Every parent and/or guardian is automatically a member of our booster family. The band boosters provide monetary and volunteer support for the Millard West bands. The boosters assist the directors in chaperoning the band, moving equipment, assisting with uniforms, planning fundraising, providing snacks and refreshments at band events and concerts, and many other tasks. We welcome all parents in joining us to support our amazing band students!

Welcome to Millard West and we will see you in the band room!
